Students actively participate in building a real, flyable two-seater experimental aircraft from scratch, a rare and impactful hands-on experience.
The Teen Aviation of New Jersey - Aircraft Build Program offers high school students a unique, hands-on opportunity to construct a real two-seater experimental aircraft, a Van's Aircraft RV-12iS. Participants engage in all aspects of aircraft construction, from initial assembly of components like the tail cone, empennage, fuselage, and wings, to working on the finish subkit which includes the interior, flight control linkages, landing gear, and canopy. Students gain practical skills in shop safety practices, the use of aircraft manufacturing equipment, and project management. The program aims to deepen students' interest in aviation and STEM fields, exposing them to potential career paths in engineering and piloting. Mentors with aviation backgrounds guide students through the build process, fostering teamwork and problem-solving abilities. The completed aircraft is eventually sold to fund future builds, ensuring the program's continuity.
Students meet every Saturday for five hours, working on various aspects of the aircraft build under the guidance of experienced mentors, often including lunch and social time.
This program is ideal for high school students aged 13-18 with a sincere interest in aviation and a commitment to regular attendance, who are looking for hands-on STEM experience.
