Montclair State University: The Mathematics of Musical Instruments

Students will have the unique opportunity to design and prototype a new musical instrument inspired by mathematical principles.

🔥 High School 🕒 1-week Pre-College Program In-person 💰 $1,900 total

About this camp

This pre-college program allows high school students to delve into the fascinating relationship between mathematics and music. Through hands-on activities, students will investigate how equations shape sound, studying how frequency, amplitude, and harmonics emerge from physical systems. They will learn how mathematical models predict the behavior of real-world instruments and discover how scales are built from ratios and how symmetry influences tone. The program also explores famous equations like the wave equation and how boundary conditions and material properties influence sound production. The culmination of the program is a collaborative design challenge where students work together to design a new musical instrument inspired by mathematical principles, prototyping an elegant and expressive instrument that blends tradition with innovation. A field trip to the Museum of Mathematics (MoMath) in New York City is also included, offering interactive exhibits on motion, symmetry, geometry, and sound.
